How to save, restore or clear quiz progress
You can play without saving. If you want to return later, choose Save progress to keep the round in this browser on this device.

Play without saving
Your round stays in the current tab while you answer and review. If you have not saved it, reloading, closing the tab or leaving the page can lose that progress. A result on screen does not mean it has been saved.
You do not need an account, name or email address to save a round. The stored copy contains the quiz and its answers. It stays in this browser rather than following you to another device.
Choose whether to keep saving this round
- Before starting, check Save progress on this device if you want your answers saved as you go. Leave it unchecked to play without saving.
- During an unsaved round, choose Save progress to save it and keep saving later changes.
- Look for “Progress saved on this device.” That message confirms the save worked.
- Once saving is on, your answers and progress update the stored copy. If a later save fails, keep the tab open and read the error message.
- When you return, choose Continue saved round to restore it. Choose Clear saved progress if you no longer want to keep it.
A restored map round uses Name the highlighted place, even if you originally used Find a named place. Your questions and submitted answers are kept, and the restore message explains the format. Flag and capital quizzes keep their own question types. A timed round also keeps its original deadline: leaving the page does not pause it. If time has run out, remaining questions become skipped and the first-round result is calculated.
Clear saved progress
Select Clear saved progress to turn saving off and remove the stored round. Read the confirmation. If deletion fails, saving still stops, but the older copy may remain. Try again or remove it through your browser’s site-data settings. Clearing the saved copy does not start a new round; use New round when you want another attempt.
The clear button removes quiz progress for that set. It does not clear your color-theme preference. To remove everything the browser stores for MapRounds, use the browser’s own site-data settings.
What to do when saving fails
| Message or symptom | Meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| This browser could not save progress | Storage was unavailable, denied or unable to accept the write | Keep playing in the current page; adjust browser storage settings only if you want saving |
| The saved round could not be restored | Stored data was invalid, incompatible or incomplete | Start a fresh round; do not assume partial data is a reliable result |
| Saved progress could not be cleared | The browser rejected removal of the old copy; continued saving has been turned off | Check site storage settings and retry, or remove site data through the browser |
| No saved round on another device | Local data was not transferred | Start a new round on that device |
You can continue an unsaved round after a storage error. Keep the tab open if you want to finish it. If you plan to rely on saving, try saving and restoring a short round first. Browser storage is useful for returning to practice, but it is not a backup.
Try saving and clearing a round
- Open Countries of Europe with Timer off and start a short round.
- Submit one answer, then select Save progress and read the result.
- Reload the page and use Continue saved round if offered. Check that the question position and response agree with the saved state.
- Select Clear saved progress, reload again, and confirm that the saved-round prompt is no longer offered.
- If you see an error, keep the tab open and follow the message. Do not assume the saved copy has changed.
Shared computers
On a classroom display, library computer or borrowed device, leaving the round unsaved is often simplest. If you save it, clear it before handing the browser to someone else. Anyone using the same browser profile may be able to restore it; there is no account password.
