Country vs. continent: what’s the difference?
Kenya is a country; Africa is a continent. Knowing which kind of place a question asks for is the first step to answering it.

What is a country, and what is a continent?
A country and a continent describe different kinds of places. Kenya is a country in Africa; Japan is a country in Asia. If a question asks for a continent, the country name will not answer it, even if you know exactly where that country is. Read the category as well as the map.
| Category | What the name describes | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Country | A political geographic unit. This site states a specific selection rule when a quiz needs a country list. | Kenya; Japan; Canada |
| Continent | A large geographic division defined by a teaching convention. | Africa; Asia; North America |
Which seven continents does MapRounds use?
The continents quiz uses Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Australia. Other education systems use different groupings, sometimes combining continents or using different names. Check the convention before comparing answers.
Europe and Asia are a useful example: they share a connected landmass, but this quiz treats them as separate continents. Countries that span more than one region also need a clear grouping rule. You can find that rule on each regional quiz page.
Practice in two steps
- Read the prompt without answering. Say “country” or “continent” aloud or silently.
- Select a name from that category. Then check its position on the map.
- If the answer was wrong, write a correction that includes both levels: “Kenya is a country; Africa is its continent in this exercise.”
Try it
- 1. Sort these names into countries or continents: Canada, Asia, Kenya, Antarctica, Japan, Europe.
- 2. A prompt asks, “Which continent contains Kenya?” Should you answer Kenya or Africa?
- 3. A seven-continent quiz offers Australia and Oceania. Which matches this site’s convention?
- 4. Does absence from the site’s UN-member country set prove that a place does not exist?
Check your answers
- 1. Countries: Canada, Kenya, Japan. Continents: Asia, Antarctica, Europe.
- 2. Africa. Kenya identifies the country already named in the question.
- 3. Australia. Read the separate Australia and Oceania lesson before changing between the continent quiz and the regional hub.
- 4. No. A quiz covers a particular list of places. Leaving something out does not mean it does not exist.
Start with the seven continents, then try the countries in one region. Working on one kind of place at a time lets you concentrate on location without also having to switch categories.
