Australia vs. Oceania: country, continent and region

Australia is both a country name and the continent name used in MapRounds. Oceania is the wider region that includes Australia and neighboring Pacific countries.

Australia can mean a country or a continent

You will find Australia in both the country quiz and the seven-continent quiz. In one, the name refers to the country; in the other, it is the continent label used by this site. Read whether the question asks for a country or a continent before answering.

Oceania covers a broader region

MapRounds uses Oceania for its regional country, capital and flag quizzes. The UN’s M49 statistical grouping divides Oceania into Australia and New Zealand, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. That regional grouping is different from the list of seven continents used here.

New Zealand and Fiji are in the Oceania country set, but neither is part of the country of Australia. The included-place list shows which countries a particular quiz covers.

Australia’s states and mainland territories

The Australian states and mainland territories quiz includes six states, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. It is an eight-place set. Jervis Bay Territory and the external territories are not included, so this is not a list of every Australian territory.

Try it

  • 1. A question asks for a continent under MapRounds’ seven-continent convention. Choose Australia or Oceania.
  • 2. A learner says Fiji must be part of the country Australia because both appear in the Oceania hub. What has been confused?
  • 3. Should Australia be selected as an island in this site’s major-islands quiz?
  • 4. Does the eight-unit Australian states and mainland territories set cover every territory associated with Australia?

Check your answers

  • 1. Australia.
  • 2. Membership in a broad region has been confused with membership in a country. The hub includes distinct countries.
  • 3. No. It is excluded under this quiz’s stated convention.
  • 4. No. It includes six states, the ACT and the Northern Territory. Jervis Bay Territory and the external territories are not included.

Before switching quizzes, ask yourself what you are naming: a country, a continent, a region or a state or territory. A place name can be familiar and still answer the wrong question.
